Data East · 1990 · Early solid state (1977 to 1990)
Design: Joe Kaminkow, Ed Cebula · Art: Kevin O'Connor, Margaret Hudson
Data East's The Simpsons came out in 1990 and it was a hit. It won the AMOA's award for best pinball game of 1990, and players credit it with helping bring pinball back after the video game years. Joe Kaminkow and Ed Cebula designed it with input from Matt Groening, who said it let him design a pinball machine like he always wanted to as a kid. The art was drawn in pencil, the pop bumpers are nuclear cooling towers, and the real cast voices the callouts. It was meant to be Data East's first dot-matrix game, but Data East's president didn't want to risk the company on a late display, so it shipped with two alphanumeric displays. 5,502 were made. Stern's The Simpsons Pinball Party from 2003 is a different game.
Bench check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing toy, glass or key should come off the price.
The CPU's three AA batteries are the biggest risk to the board. Burned connectors and a leaking 5 V capacitor on the power supply are the other common Data East jobs.
Buying your first one? Red flags in a pinball listing covers the photos and videos to ask for, and the battery corrosion guide shows what leaking batteries do to an old CPU board.
We haven’t been through this game’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for a video of a full game, a photo of the CPU board and photos of the playfield in good light, and ask what’s been replaced. Pass on any seller who won’t answer.
