Bally · 1992 · Dot-matrix era (1991 to 1999)
Design: Pat Lawlor, Larry DeMar · Art: John Youssi
No flipper game has outsold The Addams Family. Midway built 20,270 of them under the Bally name in 1992, off the back of the hit film. Pat Lawlor asked to design it because the TV show was his childhood favorite, and he did it with Larry DeMar, whose Thing Flips has the game take over a flipper and aim for the swamp. Thing himself rises out of his box and carries the ball away with a magnet. Raul Julia recorded new lines just for the game, and Anjelica Huston had her nose redrawn on the backglass. It was also the first game to make you finish a run of modes to reach a wizard mode. In 1994 Bally made 1,000 numbered Gold editions with new rules and gold trim, and late original games came in gold cabinets too.

Hard to find if missing
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing toy, glass or key should come off the price.
Battery leakage on the CPU board and a tired plasma display are the common jobs on a game this age. The Thing hand, bookcase and Fliptronics I board are the parts to see working.
Buying your first one? Red flags in a pinball listing covers the photos and videos to ask for, and the battery corrosion guide shows what leaking batteries do to an old CPU board.
We haven’t been through this game’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for a video of a full game, a photo of the CPU board and photos of the playfield in good light, and ask what’s been replaced. Pass on any seller who won’t answer.
