Gary Stern helped found Data East's pinball division in November 1986, working out of the old Stern Electronics plant, and its first game, Laser War, came out in March 1987. Its boards borrow heavily from Williams System 11. Data East got to dot-matrix first, with a small display on Checkpoint in February 1991, then moved to the 128 x 32 size from Lethal Weapon 3. By 1994 it held about a quarter of the pinball market. Sega took over the division in 1994 and ran it as Sega Pinball until September 1999, so mid-90s games like Baywatch carry the Sega badge. Then Sega sold everything to Gary Stern.
