Sega · 1995 · Dot-matrix era (1991 to 1999)
Design: Joe Kaminkow, Joe Balcer · Art: Markus Rothkranz, Jeff Busch
Baywatch came from Sega Pinball in February 1995, soon after Sega took over Data East's pinball division in 1994. Joe Kaminkow and Joe Balcer designed it. There's a mini-flipper with a plastic shark fin on top called Shark Flips, a Lock Tower for 5-ball multiball and a trap door on the ramp. Sega sold it as "Bigger than the Rest!", and the display backs that up, a 192x64 dot-matrix with its own 68000 CPU, larger than the standard size. It was also the first game with Sega's Portals menu system and takes up to six players. Markus Rothkranz and Jeff Busch did the art, and it has a topper on the backbox. Check the big display first, because it's the hardest part to fix.
Bench check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing toy, glass or key should come off the price.
The large 192x64 display is the weak spot, and it usually fails by going blank or resetting the game when the 5 V logic supply sags. CPU battery leakage and trough optos are the other common jobs.
Buying your first one? Red flags in a pinball listing covers the photos and videos to ask for, and the battery corrosion guide shows what leaking batteries do to an old CPU board.
We haven’t been through this game’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for a video of a full game, a photo of the CPU board and photos of the playfield in good light, and ask what’s been replaced. Pass on any seller who won’t answer.
