Williams · 1990 · Early solid state (1977 to 1990)
Design: Pat Lawlor · Art: John Youssi
Whirlwind is Pat Lawlor's storm-chasing game, and it was the first pinball with a fan on top that blows air at you when the discs spin. Williams built 7,304 in 1990, one of the last System 11B games before WPC took over. Three counter-rotating discs throw the ball around, all driven off one motor to save cost, and six pop bumpers sit in two groups. It was John Youssi's first game with Lawlor. He posed as the van driver, and the kid in the truck wore a Cubs cap until Williams' lawyers had a W sticker put over the C on the first translites. It's also the first game with a Grand Champion score that never resets, and the term cellar hole reportedly comes from its Cellar shot.
Bench check
Battery damage on the MPU, a separated disc-motor connector and tired displays are the usual. Check the topper fan, since it's the game's signature.
Buying your first one? Red flags in a pinball listing covers the photos and videos to ask for, and the battery corrosion guide shows what leaking batteries do to an old CPU board.
We haven’t been through this game’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for a video of a full game, a photo of the CPU board and photos of the playfield in good light, and ask what’s been replaced. Pass on any seller who won’t answer.
