Bally · 1993 · Dot-matrix era (1991 to 1999)
Design: John Trudeau · Art: Kevin O'Connor
Judge Dredd is a Bally SuperPin widebody from 1993, built on the 2000 AD comic character rather than the 1995 film. John Trudeau designed it with four flippers, two autoplungers and no pop bumpers, and Tim Kitzrow voices Dredd. The centerpiece is Deadworld, a turning planet with a magnetic crane. Prototypes locked balls on its ring, but a German distributor objected, so production games use virtual locks and only the third ball goes to the planet, where the crane lifts it straight out. Trudeau fought to keep the original and lost. It's the only pinball with a Supergame, an all-multiball game for an extra credit with its own high scores. It was also the second game with DCS sound, and Bally built 6,990.
Bench check
Deadworld is the weak spot, with a slipping gearbox gear or a bent crane. Battery damage on the CPU and a misplaced backbox connector that kills the start button are the board faults.
Buying your first one? Red flags in a pinball listing covers the photos and videos to ask for, and the battery corrosion guide shows what leaking batteries do to an old CPU board.
We haven’t been through this game’s listings yet. Search eBay and run every listing through the checklist above. Ask for a video of a full game, a photo of the CPU board and photos of the playfield in good light, and ask what’s been replaced. Pass on any seller who won’t answer.
